Top 10 Physics Tips

  1. Learn your units - Units are vital, because if you know your unit you can usually derive the equation or expression that you are looking for.

  2. Draw a picture - By drawing a picture you give yourself a visual representation of the problem at hand...plus it makes you look like you understand the question!

  3. Work the examples - By doing the examples you can test your methods and verify your steps.

  4. Write out your thoughts - If you are finding it hard to solve the problem, then write out your thoughts. Put all your givens and quantities on paper, and think about how they fit...just like a puzzle!

  5. Check your equations - Make sure that the units are equal on both sides of the equation. You will save yourself a lot of time if you make sure the equations are right!

  6. Don't round until you are finished - Significant figures are important only for the final answer. There is no reason for you to keep on top of the sig figs throughout the whole problem.

  7. Read the book before hand - Getting familiar with the material is crucial to understanding and enjoying the lecture...well at least understanding it!

  8. Don't Memorize...Know it! - You cannot memorize physics and pass easily. You must understand it and know it. Physics is conceptual and mathematical. Therefore, you must know how math works and how the physics comes together.

  9. Go to class! - This is a big one. Even if you are familiar with the topic you should always go to class. Make sure you understand every aspect that is discussed.

  10. Do extra credit! - Every point counts so do not pass it up.
